Video production
••3 min read•Media7 EditorialWhen to choose 16:9, 9:16 and 1:1 video formats
You cannot crop one shoot into three ratios after the fact. Choose the format before the day, from the platform and the faces in frame.

Pick the ratio in the brief, not in the edit
A horizontal interview cropped for a phone loses the face or the whiteboard. A vertical Reel dropped onto a website leaves black bars. Aspect ratio is a communication choice, not a camera setting. Write down where the film will live before anyone unpacks a lens.
Where 16:9 still earns its place
YouTube, a site hero, a board presentation and television still want landscape. The ratio holds a room, two people and a person-plus-product in one frame. Corporate films, brand films and explainers stay 16:9 for a reason. If the only destinations are YouTube and the website, you do not need to shoot vertical.
Where 9:16 is the real frame
Reels, TikTok, Shorts and most stories are vertical. They want a close face, a quiet background and spare room top and bottom for type. Two people side by side fall apart in this crop; stack them or cut between close-ups. A screen, a slide or a wide table will not read.
When 1:1 is worth planning
Square still appears in feed posts and some ad placements. It can be cut from 16:9, but gestures at the edges disappear. If Instagram feed is a primary outlet, keep a centre safe zone on the day and the square comes out cleanly later. Shooting only for 1:1 is rarely worth a setup of its own.
Three ratios from one day
The economical method is to run the main conversation in 16:9 and keep a second camera in 9:16, centred on face and hands. If there is only one camera, shoot each answer landscape and a short repeat vertical. That looks cleaner than a late crop.
Type, captions and the safe zone
On a vertical frame the title eats the top, captions the bottom, buttons still lower. The face has to live between those bands. On 16:9 a logo and a short line can sit in a corner. If nobody says this on set, the edit either crops the face or drops type on top of it.
How Media7 plans it
When platforms are in the brief, the shot list carries two boxes: landscape and portrait. Media7 builds both in the same light on corporate and product days so one shoot closes the website and Reels together.
