Multi-camera live stream setup: encoder, internet, backup

A clean feed to YouTube, Zoom and a site at once depends on encoder, stable upload and backup. A practical Baku setup.

One signal, several platforms

Brands often want YouTube, LinkedIn Live and internal Zoom at once. You do not aim a separate camera at each platform — you send one program feed. That feed comes from a switcher plus encoder pair. In Baku that pair is the technical heart of a working live stream.

What the encoder does

It turns camera HDMI/SDI into RTMP or SRT. Bitrate matches real upload: promising 1080p60 on a weak link drops frames. On test day you measure actual upload, not a paper “100 Mbps” Wi-Fi claim.

Internet: wired primary, 4G backup

Ethernet is priority for production. A backup modem runs bonded or as manual failover. SIMs from two operators are checked so both do not sit in the same dead zone. A UPS covers short power cuts.

Cameras and switching

Two to four cameras enter the switcher over SDI/HDMI. The operator cuts to the programme or the action. Preview and program stay separate so a wrong frame never hits air. Lower-thirds and logos come from the switcher or a graphics machine.

Audio bus

Speaker, ambient and playback stay on separate channels. A limiter holds peaks without chopping a shout. Most stream complaints are about sound — so the audio check runs longer than the video test.

Platform keys and rights

One person holds the stream key; otherwise a casual “test” can go live. Delay, chat moderation and the record button are named in the brief. On sponsored streams, logos and chat rules are agreed early.

Media7 checklist

Tech walkthrough, test stream, failover script and a master recording at the end. The same setup scales for conference, event and competition. Timelapse is not part of this rack — it can run in parallel on a separate interval camera.
