The first 3 seconds of a short video: how to build a hook

Listen to this article1:50

On Reels and TikTok viewers decide in the first seconds. Working hook types and shoot rules for brands in Baku.

The first 3 seconds are ad budget

Algorithms and people do the same thing: skip a dull open. So the hook is written on its own, not scraped from edit leftovers. In Baku SMM teams often keep a pretty middle and a weak start.

Hook types

A question, an odd detail, the result shown early, fast motion and a direct address. “Hi, today…” almost never works. A big product close-up in frame one is safer.

What to do on the shoot

Keep the camera close so face or product fills the frame. Slow pans and empty rooms die in second one. In Reels packages Media7 plans a separate hook shot per film.

Text and sound

On-screen text must read in 1–2 seconds. Cut long lines. Meaning should survive muted playback — subtitles are part of the hook.

Test a second open

One body can wear two opens. Keep the one that holds in the first second. That is not another shoot day — it is ten extra minutes.

When a pro shoot is worth it

Daily Stories can stay on a phone. Campaigns, launches and ads need light, sound and several hook options. When video production and SMM share one brief, the open does not fight the message.

Media7 practice

The brief has a dedicated hook line. Two or three variants on set. Two exports for A/B. Reports watch hold by second — not likes alone.

Without a hook a pretty edit still fails

A strong middle loses people after a weak open. So SMM and video production should share one day. In our short-video work every Reels gets its own hook line — “we’ll invent it later” is wasted budget.
